Who wants a sleepunder?

Happy Valentine’s Day! 💐❣️ A couple key things to remember today: 1) there’s no such thing as too much chocolate and 2) there’s nothing wrong with buying yourself flowers (if Miley Cyrus said it, it has to be true). We’re celebrating love in all its shapes and sizes today, including the love we have for all of you joining us on this wild ride we call parenting.

Today in Teen Slang

We’ve got a new slang saying to look out for: “Post this on IG Reels.”

Might sound innocent enough, but our sources say this is actually a pretty brutal thing to tell another person. Why? Because Instagram is known for its subpar efforts to filter negative comments or bullying—that leaves the platform ripe with disparaging and mean comments. If you see “Post this on IG Reels,” you’re really seeing “go get roasted in the comments, loser.”

We recommend keeping an eye out for it, whether your kid is saying it to their friends or their friends are saying it to them. And if you want to brush up on your internet safety parenting skills? We’ve got you: 5 Ways to Keep Your Teen Safe Online, from our Common Parent experts straight to you.

P.S. Feeling lost when it comes to understanding your kids’ slang? You are not alone. No cap.

The Life Skills Your Kids Need

You might not be able to write a check anymore, but your kids should still learn how. That’s one of 100 essential life skills from this stellar list of all the things you might forget to teach your teens, from tipping servers to plunging a toilet to using birth control. We’re planning to work through it, one by one, until our kids are ready to fly the coop (and do their own laundry 🤞).

Disney Gets into Gaming

Big news: Disney is investing $1.5 billion in Epic Games, the company behind the very popular games Fortnite and Fall Guys (we’d bet money your teen has told you all about ’em).

Why parents should pay attention: Disney and Epic Games are teaming up to build entirely new content worlds. We’re talking Disney characters in Fortnite and vice versa, plus more super engaging ways to play your favorite games or consume your favorite content.

  • The optimistic read: This will be an enriching experience for teens who love to game, one that opens up new avenues for creative expression.

  • The pessimistic read: This will make gaming and media even more addicting than they already are.

No matter how you look at it, it’s not a bad call to brush up on healthy gaming habits for your kids…and we’ve got the perfect episode to help you do it.

Have You Heard of a Sleepunder?

Source: Verywell Family

Slumber parties are one of the core memories of being a teenager, at least for us. But not every parent or kid is down for a sleepover. Kids might not love being away from home, and parents might be one of the almost half of parents in the U.S. who describe themselves as overprotective.

So there’s a new fad: the “sleepunder” or “lateover,” where parents allow their kids to go over to a friend’s house but pick them up late at night before bed. There are mixed feelings on what this means for kids and parents alike, but we’re all for doing what feels right for you and your family—whether that’s a slumber party or a 2am pickup.

We’re curious—would you do a sleepunder?

This Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing the perfect recs to help you navigate all things love with your teen or tween—or partner in parenting.

And we’ve rounded up the very best of our Common Parent expert interviews to do just that. Not a Common Parent member yet? Sign up here…consider it a Valentine’s Day gift to yourself (but don’t skip the chocolate).

We’ve got just one more thing to say today: This one goes out to all the moms who were blasting Usher post-Super Bowl in the kitchen this week, reminiscing on the days they were chugging vodka, dancing on a bar to “My Boo,” and making out with strangers…not slicing the crust off PB&J sandwiches.

You will go through so many different phases throughout the years—just because you’re in your PB&J era right now doesn’t mean you can’t still shake your a*s when you want to. You’re never just one thing. ✨
