AI Models, Teen Tech Rules & a Mom-Approved Reality Check

We’ve got your weekly dose of calm, connection, and digital confidence.

Hey friends,

November’s here, and just like that, we’re barreling toward the New Year. With Daylight Savings behind us here in our neck of the woods, it’s basically dark by 5pm. As if our days weren’t already packed enough, now we’re doing all the kid chauffeuring in the dark! As the days get shorter and the holiday season ramps up, it’s even more important to pause, breathe, and savour the small moments. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the digital chaos that comes with parenting in this world, know that Screen Sense is here to help you stay informed and confident every step of the way. Remember, you’re not alone. We’re all in this together.

AI Models Have Hit The Magazines

In the August edition of Vogue, Guess ran an ad featuring one of the fashion world’s newest faces. It was an AI-generated model. Stunning, yes. But it raises real questions about how AI is reshaping the worlds our kids grow up in, from beauty standards to what they believe is real versus fake. These hyper-realistic, machine-made images are more than just fashion — they influence self-esteem, creativity, and expectations. For kids growing up surrounded by digitally crafted perfection, it can be hard to distinguish authentic beauty from AI-generated ideals, which may affect their confidence and body image. As parents, it’s essential to open conversations about media literacy.

The image of this woman is AI generated.

Help your kids identify digitally altered images, discuss the difference between realistic and AI-generated visuals, and emphasize the value of uniqueness over unrealistic perfection. Encourage them to critically evaluate what they see on social media or in ads. These discussions not only promote healthy self-esteem but also build resilience against unrealistic societal standards.

Parental Controls in AI Platforms

Tech is racing ahead, and companies like Character AI are responding to concerns with tighter controls, in this case, banning users under 18 to better protect teens from unregulated AI chatbots. These moves come amid lawsuits and public pushback and highlight how fast the rules are evolving. However, while these controls represent progress, they’re not foolproof solutions. Teens often find ways around restrictions through older siblings or friends, or by faking their age. Staying informed about what AI chatbots and other digital tools are out there is crucial. As parents, actively involve yourself in your teen’s digital life: review the apps and services they use, explore settings together, and set clear expectations about safe AI use. Regular check-ins about their digital experiences create an open dialogue where kids feel comfortable sharing issues. If you’re just getting started with these conversations with your kids, we can help. We created the Screen Sense guide to help parents lay a strong foundation when it comes to understanding the apps, settings, and online spaces your kids are using every day. Learn more here.

Okay, let’s switch gears to something way sunnier…literally. We just got back from the Dominican Republic for a girls’ trip to Club Med, and let’s just say: we needed it. The sunshine, the laughter, the late-night chats… and, of course, the bathing suit conversation. We all have that moment, standing there in a swimsuit, tugging at a strap or thinking “ugh, if only I…”. But here’s what we want you to remember: no one is judging you more harshly than you. So here’s your permission slip, from us to you: wear the swimsuit, take the picture, make the memory. Life’s too short to sit on the sidelines worrying about dimples and angles. You’re amazing. Don’t forget it. 💛

Oh, and another thing we learned? Portable chargers are a gosh darn life saver when traveling. Because nothing kills the vacation vibe faster than a dead phone when you’re trying to capture memories, navigate, or just stay connected. Trust us, pack one.

Here’s our fave: it’s compact, powerful, and perfect for everyone in the family… especially teens who somehow always “forget” to charge their phone. It works for iPhones, Androids, iWatches, tablets, and every other device your crew carries around, and it’s small enough to clip right onto a keychain or backpack. Basically, it’s one of those tiny gadgets that saves the day over and over again and ensures your teen can never say, “I ran out of battery.”

We’ll catch you next week!
